How to work out what an appliance costs to run
- Multiply the watts by the hours it runs a day and divide by 1,000 to get kWh a day. A 1,000-watt heater used for 3 hours uses 3 kWh.
- Multiply the kWh by your price per kWh. At the US average of 18.31¢ (July 2026), 3 kWh costs $0.55, or about $16 a month.
- Prices run from 12.7¢ per kWh in Louisiana to 48.0¢ in Hawaii, so the same appliance costs 3.8 times as much to run in Hawaii.
