- The car with the best gas mileage (not counting hybrids) for 2026–2027 is the 2026 Honda Civic 4Dr, at 36 mpg combined (32 city, 41 highway).
- At $4.14 a gallon for regular (Midwest region average, week of October 19, 2026), it costs about $1,727 a year in gas for 15,000 miles, or 11.5¢ a mile.
- The best hybrid is the 2026 Toyota Prius at 57 mpg: about $1,091 a year, $636 less than the best non-hybrid.
- The typical car gets 24.5 mpg, which costs about $2,538 a year at the same price.
